Como! I lived on lake Como for about two years, and spent a lot of time giving “tours” to my friends and family!
People love spending their weekends here, but don’t get a lot of time to see ALL the wonderful places this city has to offer! I’m going to tell you about the best two-day tour you can have while visiting, you’ll be able to see more sights that most see in a week+ I’m going to include a restaurant tour so you can wine and dine in the best places the city has!
It’s morning time! While it’s not too hot outside yet, you can have a leisurely stroll through the town, check out Duomo(city’s main Cathedral)
and walk along the lakefront! When the time’s around 13:00-14:30 you should get lunch at the Riva Cafe restaurant, if you get there later they might not accept your order( the schedule runs tight in Italy). I would recommend ordering a pizza, they’re truly amazing at this cozy place!
For dessert you need to check out the Gelateria, which is right around the corner, I’d say their Ice Cream is definitely worth trying!
My “guide” 😀 is written for travellers who rented a car, and I guarantee you it’s going to be worth getting it!
Lake Como is famous for it’s beautiful villas! My two favorites are villa Balbianello and villa d’Este! That’s where we’re going after lunch! Even though the d’Este villa is closer, we’re going to explore villa Balbianello first, since it closes to the public at 18:00, after that it can be rented to serve as a wedding location, or a place for some kind of important meeting 🙂
The drive to the historic villa takes about 40 minutes from town, and don’t forget to leave at least 2 hours for exploratory purposes! Getting a guided tour is a must-do, you’re going to learn and see all kinds of interesting and historical things, including the name and fame of its last owner! 😉
On our way back we’re going to visit the villa d’Este!
It’s notoriety and beauty is known around the world, and it’s surely the best place to stay on the Como lakeside. After exploring the main part of the hotel, you should know that behind it sits a real standing castle(which you can climb atop and take a stunning picture) that surrounds a vast area of the estate.
I can surely predict that you’re going to be really tired, and the Italian aperitivo time will arrive while touring the hotel, take a quick hour rest and enjoy a soothing evening cocktail like the Aperol Spritz, while glancing over at the eerie Como lake, and inspecting the fancy guests of the d’Este villa.
Now we’re obviously running on an Italian schedule, and the Italian schedule says it’s dinner time! 🙂 I recommend stopping at the Cernobbio commune, which is located about five minutes away from your aperitivo place, and is on your way back to Como! This amazing restaurant called L’Onda is a wonderful dinner place. Tuna tartare, shrimp pasta with mussels, doesn’t matter what you order, you are going to be pleased with their menu either way!
Close to 12, there’s going to be a live performance on the restaurant patio, so you can dine and dance at the same place!
I’d recommend starting your second day off with a light hike in the mountains, where you’ll get the see the full natural beauty of lake Como from a bird’s eye view!
If you’re driving there (I’d recommend getting medium sized car) and have a GPS, type in Baita Boletto Fabrizio and head straight there!
It’s a small restaurant that has a parking place nearby, you can continue on foot afterwards!
If you’re not using a car, then you can utilize the local Funicular that takes you to the city of Brunate, which will expose you the full beauty from its viewing grounds.
Eating out at any surrounding place is going to be great, but my favorite lunch location is the Ristorante Bellavista! A stunning view of the lake it has!
The menu is slightly different that the one on the lakeside, the polenta and meats offered are true mountain dishes!
If you still have some energy left after lunch, I would direct you towards the most romantic city on Como’s shore, Bellagio! You can either get there by car, or you can use the local ferry, either way it will take you around 45 minutes to get to this fantastic destination! You’ll need at least three hours in the bag to grasp the sheer magnificence of this town! Don’t forget to get something special for the daily aperitivo! As much as you’re going to fall in love with the city, you’re going to need to go back to Como for dinner, because I’m going to send you to my favorite restaurant in Como, the Osteria La Tana Dei Pescatori! Order literally whatever you want on the menu, it’s going to be delicious! 🙂
After dinner don’t forget to pay a visit to the Piazza Alessandro Volta square! You’ll get to see what the real Italian nightlife looks like! A multitude of bars is going to be booming, since all those who have just finished their dinner are flocking there for a late night chat!
At your night’s end, get yourself a well deserved treat, maybe a kilogram of Italy’s finest ice cream from the Gelateria Chiara will suffice! Eat it all night and maybe leave yourself some for tomorrow’s breakfast! Make sure to choose some different flavors, my favorites are the pistachio and forest fruit ones! These two days aren’t going to come easy, but they’ll be really interesting and will surely make your short trip one to remember!!!! ❤️
